QUITO (Reuters) -A magnitude 6.8 earthquake shook a coastal region of Ecuador and northern Peru midday Saturday, leaving at least four persons useless and ensuing in some structural destruction.

“I call for relaxed and for individuals to get informed via formal channels,” explained Ecuadorian President Guillermo Lasso in a tweet.

The quake, which the U.S. Geological Study (USGS) measured at magnitude 6.8, struck at a depth of 66.4 km (41.3 miles) about 10 kilometers (6.2 miles) from the town of Balao in the province of Guayas.

The earthquake did not seem most likely to generate a tsunami, authorities explained.

Ecuador’s Secretariat of Threat Administration reported in a statement that a wall had collapsed onto a vehicle, killing one particular individual, in the metropolis of Cuenca. In the local community of Machala, a few individuals were being killed and multiple structures collapsed, such as a two-story household and a wharf, even though a number of communities misplaced electric power.

The earthquake also led to structural destruction in two other provinces, which includes a collapsed wall in a supermarket, and was felt in more than 50 percent of the country’s 24 provinces, the Secretariat stated.
