Rowling has become embroiled in an ongoing row over transgender issues, after stating that biological sex is real and an important factor when considering women’s health and safety.  Some detractors have branded her “transphobic”.

Quidditch, the magical sport she invented, was adapted by Harry Potter fans on American campuses and made into a formalised seven-a-side game in 2005. Its rules are revised and governed by the IQA.

The obscure sporting body is not only seeking to distance the game from Rowling but also from the studio which made her books into a lucrative film franchise.

The trademark for “quidditch” is controlled by Warner Bros, and it is hoped the new name of “quadball” will allow the sport to advertise and grow without being hindered by copyright.

Andy Marmer, heading the IQA’s “Name Change Committee”, said: “This is a tremendous development for the sport and represents an amazing opportunity for us to continue the incredible growth we’ve already seen over less than two decades.”

The sport requires players to hold a “broom” between their legs, with some players (chasers) assigned to pass and score a ball (quaffle), others to tackle them (bludgers), and one to keep goal. One player on each team seeks the “snitch” – a flying ball which Harry Potter caught in the franchise – which in real life is usually a tennis ball dragged on the end of a rope.
